“A Dystopian Dream,” the first UK solo exhibition of Shang Chengxiang

The carefully curated works allude to fragments of reality, yet are rendered in an almost imperceptible and elusive manner. Transcending the boundaries of the real, they invite viewers into a space suspended between familiarity, illusion, and reverie. The scenes depicted—drawn from the ordinary and the everyday—are far from arbitrary; rather, they act as vessels for states of awareness that remain difficult to grasp in daily life, and for emotions that resist articulation.

As the artist remarks, “My questions about existence, emotion, and meaning continue to linger at the depths of my heart. I can only persist in turning inward through painting, searching across different dimensions in an attempt to restore a more complete self.”
